Joe Cahill showed up in Boulder with a turquoise Strat and dancing feet.

Music was central to his existence, and the sounds coming off a concert stage sometimes seemed to soak into his body and govern it for hours after the encore. We went to see P-Funk one night at the Fox Theatre, and he danced in the street outside after the show, danced as we bought snacks at a convenience store, danced in the car on the way home, and danced, I’m sure, in his dreams. “Feet, don’t fail me now” was the night’s mantra.

I met Joe when we were students at the State University of New York at Oswego. We became close when we both studied in London for a semester. That’s when we discovered our mutual interest in music and guitar. We jammed together on the plane to England. Not every passenger was pleased with our impromptu performance, but I love that memory. I had found a kindred spirit.

It’s one of the memories I’ve been returning to this week as I’ve read about Joe’s death. Killed in New Orleans. Shot by a homeowner after Joe tried to enter the place. Bizarre circumstances that raise so many questions. What the hell was going on?

Joe and I were housemates in Fort Collins for about a year in the mid-90s. At one point, deep questions of faith and self and life and death troubled him to the point of near breakdown. Joe could be intense. Often this was a wonderful quality. In this case, it was not, and, though I lost touch with him years ago and could in no way speak to his state of mind, I’ve wondered this week if those old demons have continued to haunt him.

But Joe’s friends on social media sites have commented about how big his heart was, and this is why what happened in New Orleans is not the Joe we knew. He was kind to a fault. One night when we lived in Fort Collins he met a guy who needed a place to stay, and Joe told him he could stay at our place. Just gave a total stranger our couch.

He had a magnetic personality. People liked him instantly, and with a cocked yet diffident smile his charm was disarming. More than once he won the attention of a girl that both of us liked.

Joe was a rock-star musical performer at parties. Back when I knew him, one of his favorites to pull out was Dylan’s “Tangled Up In Blue.” But he made a career in music by working around, not on, the stage. He established himself as one of the key local light technicians. His most recent gig was as a part of the Leftover Salmon crew, and it’s becoming clear this week by reading online comments just how deep a part of the Boulder music community Joe was. He seems to have known everyone.

The last time I communicated with Joe was on March 13. He contacted me after seeing on Facebook a picture of me with Nate Cook, of The Yawpers, in Austin at the SXSW music festival. I wrote to him that we needed to catch up. He wrote back, “Nice, Sounds good buddy, looking forward to it!”

Now that I can’t look forward to catching up, I’m looking back. I hear funky music and I see Joe dancing. “Feet, don’t fail me now.”

Colorado band The Motet are geared up for this year’s Halloween shows where the band will cover the music of Parliament Funkadelic. The Motet’s holiday shows are wildly popular with their local fans and the Boulder Theater show is already sold out. This Saturday’s show at The Ogden in Denver is also already sold out and it is no wonder with the band staging a 14 member band including vocalist and keyboardist Nigel Hall who only last year performed with The Warren Haynes Band on Halloween.

We recently caught up with the band at one of their rehearsal studios preparing for the shows. The Motet’s Dave Watts. Joey Porter and Garrett Sayers talk with Times-Call, Prairie Mountain Media reporter Quentin Young before a rehearsal. Band members also videoed Ryan Jalbert, Gabe Mervine, Matt Pitts, Dan Schwindt and Kimberly Dawson Produced by Alan Crandall. For ticket information visit www.themotet.net © Prairie Mountain Media

Carmen Tisch, the 36-year-old woman accused of damaging a painting at the new Clyfford Still Museum in Denver, committed a senseless and unpredictable act of vandalism, if what prosecutors say is true.

On Dec. 29, she went to the museum, which opened in November, and punched one of the museum’s prize possessions, “1957-J-No. 2,” valued at a minimum $30 million, then slid down it before urinating on herself, according to police. It sounds like she was very drunk.

While the incident was a criminal act, it also represents an astonishing lapse in security at the museum. Denver granted the right to maintain and display work by Still, one of the most influential American abstract painters of the 20th century. That an out-of-control drunk was allowed anywhere near the museum’s priceless works of art is an extraordinarily embarrassing stain on its record, which is less than two months long.

The sad thing is that visitors to the museum can expect to endure scrutiny of the most intense sort from now on.

Well, is it warm enough for you? It is January in Colorado so guess what, just in time for the weekend we are on tap to get more snow. Yep, that’s right, once again our wonderful Colorado weather is kind to the skiing folks and plans to dump in the mountains and we may even see some of the white stuff here on the Front Range.

If you like the warm weather though, there’s no need to despair… I have some good news. The Fox Theatre is hosting a Winter Beach Party. This is not just any beach party, this party is featuring some great local bands and hot jams. Smack Thompson and Dr. Phil Good will get things warmed up, then headlining at the Fox, for the first time, the Pete Kartsounes Band (PKB) will turn the heat up even more. Read More

No, I am not talking about tonight’s Best of Halloween show at the Aggie Theater where the Motet select the best of their prior Halloween tribute shows covering bands like Jamiroquai, Talking Heads, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Sly Stone, Earth, Wind and Fire and the Grateful Dead. I am not even talking about tomorrow night’s New Year’s eve show at the Aggie with the Motet and Euforquestra.
The holidays are a time for giving and receiving and tonight you have a couple of opportunities to do both at the same time.

I am heading over to the Mark Vann Foundation benefit concert at the Boulder Theater to check out the Great American Taxi and Friends including The Contribution, Featuring Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth, Keith Moseley of String Cheese Incident, Matt Butler of Everyone Orchestra, Sheryl Renee, & Jeff Miller and Phil Ferlino of New Monsoon, Everyone Orchestra, the Bill McKay Band, Andrew McConathy and the Drunken Hearts The Banjorchestra and more.

That is not all… if you are not into the large benefit, silent auction and multiple band then right around the corner you can attend another benefit, this one is in the memory of Nederland’s Michigan Mike and is revisiting the Acid Jazz that Mike helped happen at regular intervals in Ned.

Here is a description of the tribute by the Motet’s Scott Messersmith: “A tribute to Michigan Mike, in the form of an old-school Nederland Acid Jazz session, takes place Friday, Dec. 16 at Shine (2027 13th Street – between Pearl and Spruce) in Boulder. The improv jam features Dave Watts, Scott Messersmith, Bill Kopper, and Kerwin Brown and other guests. The cover is only a $3 suggested donation. The new venue is “gathering place for food, movement and nightlife” and is owned by the Emich sisters who ran the Trilogy Wine Bar. It features “amazing (and affordable)” food including grass-fed beef burgers, lasagna, tacos, plenty of veggie and vegan items and an entire gluten free menu.”

So there you go… two great opportunities to both give and receive and if you are like me, I plan to hit both… happy holidays!

The life and times of ‘Michigan Mike’ Torpie and his impact on Nederland, Colorado was celebrated on Monday, December 5th at First Street Pub in Nederland, just a short distance from the grounds that for many years became NedFest, a mountain music festival conceived and promoted by Torpie. Monday’s gathering was more of a Wake than a Memorial and it seemed like the perfect way to send off ‘Michigan Mike’.
The First Street Pub gathering was packed the entire time with many friends and family in attendance. Torpie’s parents, sisters and nephew had the corner table and were able to see the outpouring of love and friendship ‘Michigan Mike’ had garnered in the mountain town he so loved. One after another folks stepped up to the stage to tell stories about Torpie’s dedication and involvement with the Town. Many stories were told to the family and crowd bringing a combination of tears and laughter to the attendees.

More than the promoter of NedFest, Mike had served on the Board of Trustee’s from 2004 to 2008. During this time he was instrumental in getting Marijuana decriminalized in the town. A couple of suggestions of how to remember Mike were proposed at Monday’s

Pete Kartsounes, Colin Huff, Greg Schochet, Andrew Anderson and Scott Messersmith.

memorial. Naming the next street in Nederland “Torpie Way,” and creating a “Mountain Girl” 5k/10 run/walk were both well received ideas from the attendees. Mountain Girl was Torpie’s dog, companion and another beloved resident of Nederland.

In the corner of the pub where Torpie’s family sat, a pile of about 1000 music compact disks covered a table and guests were invited to grab a stack to take with them. Many of the disks were sent to Mike over the years from artists hoping to gain a spot on the NedFest stage. Some disks contained notes stating the request, and some had never even been opened.

Daniel Rodriguez, Silas Herman, Vince Herman, Bonnie Paine and Greg Garrison.

The personal reflections at the microphone soon gave way to an impromptu tribute musical jam with various musicians joining in throughout the evening.

This was the second time since Mike’s passing that the mountain community of Nederland came together for some stories and musical healing. On Sunday, November 27, Leftover Salmon played a surprise show at the Stage Stop in Rollinsville, Colorado. The concert -

billed that night as “A Benefit Concert for Suicide Awareness”- featured Jeff Austin, of Yonder Mountain String Band, Bonnie Paine and Daniel Rodriquez, of Elephant Revival, and many more musicians including Colin Huff and Silas Herman of Salmon Eggs. With tickets sold only at the venue, the audience – a who’s who of Nederland area folks- was treated to a special performance by the musicians in various combinations; with the theme for the night being that if you are feeling down things will eventually get better, and how to ask for help and get help if you are depressed.
Perhaps it will be The Nederland Music and Arts Festival that ‘Michigan Mike’ Torpie will be most remembered. NedFest showcased local artists along with mid-level and national touring groups. This year at NedFest I met music fans from as far away as the east coast. With a cap of 2000 tickets, the festival never sold out which made it a family friendly jewel of a music event, in beautiful mountain surroundings, put on by good mountain folks.

(Bloggers Note: Want to revisit Acid Jazz, well here is some good news from The Motet’s Scott Messersmith:

I was saddened to hear of the untimely passing of “Michigan Mike,” Mike Torpie, NedFest promoter and longtime Nederland Resident.

If you read this blog then you are aware that I am a fan of NedFest and I have known Mike for a couple of years now and I liked him as well.

Michigan Mike with Bill Kreutzmann, George Porter Jr., Kyle Hollingsworth and Steve Kimock at Nedfest 2011

Mike was a serious music fan that did his best to have fun, celebrate and bring good music to the mountain community of Nederland Colorado. Mike Torpie did much for the Nederland music scene and his impact will be felt for years to come.

While attending this year’s festival I grabbed some videos I had planned to use as a preview to next year’s festival. This is just a small collection of clips. This year’s festival was videoed by Mystic Mike and his crew and another videographer, a friend of mine named Steve so there is good documentation of the festival that started off as a few bands, a tent, small stage and a few kegs of beer and grew into a 13 year festival that is forever part of Nederland’s history.

So long Mike, thank you and you will be missed.

Bloggers Note: Tonight there will be a benefit concert at the Stage Stop by Leftover Salmon for the Ned Music scene and Suicide Prevention Awareness, tickets are only available at the door, show is at 7p.m.

More on the 2011 NedFest:

I have written about NedFest a few times this year: Nedfest celebrates 13th year,
Kreutzmann, Kimock, Hollingsworth and Porter – one time Super Group take stage at NedFest,
Third visit to NedFest for David Grisman, Leftover Salmon ‘kills it’ at NedFest.
