Hollingsworth talks NedFest and SCI fall tour

By Alan Crandall

The Times-Call recently caught up with String Cheese Incidents Kyle Hollingsworth for a brief chat about the this Friday’s NedFest performance where Hollingsworth is set to play with the Grateful Dead’s Bill Kreutzmann, Steve Kimock and George Porter Jr., of the Funky Meters.

TC – Kyle, it looks like you have been keeping busy this summer with SCI shows, your Kyle’s Brew Fest benefit for the Conscious Alliance, A Bears’ Picnic, Camp Barefoot, Mountain Stomp and now NedFest?

Yes, it has been busy and I was starting to go crazy with the touring but now I am excited to be home and to be performing at NedFest and for a hometown crowd.

TC- Your performance with Steve Kimock, Bill Kreutzmann, George Porter Jr. is being billed as a “One-time-only Super Group,” have you ever played with Kreutzmann or Porter before and what kind of jams are you planning on performing?

I have played with Porter a lot, we do a show called Funky Good Times put on by the Mountain Sun. I play that every year. I also played with Porter and Kimock in Mickey Hart’s band for entire summer a couple of years ago. That was a lot of fun. And, I just played with Kimock Last weekend. We are friends from way back in the SCI days. I am excited about Friday, this will be the first time playing with Bill Kreutzmann, and I am very excited.

TC – Will you be on Keys and vocals?

I will be on Keys and vocals and we plan to just let the music move us we will be taking the stage with minimal rehearsal and plan to musically communicate with common material if that makes sense.

TC – I see Boulder Beer is going to be pouring at the event and I believe all of your fans want to know, is there going to be the Hollingsworth inspired Hoopla Pale Ale at NedFest?

Hoopla will be at NedFest, it is a seasonal brew and the season is going away. Boulder Beer just made the last batch of Hoopla, so if you get a chance to have some, do so.

TC – The String Cheese Incident just announced their fall tour for back east called “Roots Run Deep,” are you excited about the tour?

Yes, we are getting back to our roots, by going on tour, touring by bus and being a walking, talking String Cheese music making machine.

TC – What’s next, any Incidents in Colorado’s near future?

Not on this tour but I am sure we will play again in Colorado sometime in the next year.

TC – Well Kyle, that is great, thanks for chatting with us, we look forward to seeing you at NedFest on Friday.

Ok, thanks.
